Drums & Percussion
Drums are primal...from a young age, we instinctively love to bang on things, create rhythms, dance, & feel the pulsating movement of a good groove. Just like our voice, drums are an instrument we have with us at anytime - we just need something to beat on.
Rhythms & drums have always been a fascination for me. They have always been therapeutic as a way to express what I couldn’t say through words. As a kid, my dad’s toolshed where my drums were housed was my sanctuary, a place to be with my thoughts & learn how to translate those thoughts into rhythms & songs. No matter what was happening in my world, my drums were always there to listen & to help me figure it all out.
A strong foundation of drums & percussion to build a song upon is fundamental to how we can relate that song to an audience in a variety of emotive ways. The melody paints the mood, the lyrics relay the story, & the rhythm is what connects the whole piece in our bodies, connecting this human experience that we all share to the deepest parts of our souls & bones. This is why drums play such a key element in so many ancient cultures - trance states brought on by ceremonial drumming & dancing in Africa; Celtic rhythms that carry songs & stories of ancient lineages; the deep prayer & meditation induced through the rhythms of an Indian raga...rhythms tell the story of a culture, of a region, of something that is greater than us.
As a session drummer & as a drummer in many bands over the years, it has been my focus to help drive & transmit a song's message through the rhythm & percussive arrangements, to allow the other musicians to trust that the backbone is secure enough for them to venture deeper into the song. If you are in need of drums that bump, drums that dance, or drums that allow the mood of the song to find its breath, I would be honored to work with you on finding your song’s rhythm.
