The Cooke Collective Podcast
Theres something inherently familiar about drums in all of us. Since we were little we love to bang on things, create rhythms, dance, feel the pulsating movement of a good groove. Along with our voice, drums are the one instrument we can have at anytime. Drums are primal…We just need something to beat on.
Rhythms and drums have always been a fascination for me, they have always been therapeutic for me as a way to express what I couldn’t say through words. As a kid, my dad’s toolshed (Which housed my drums, after he got tired of me banging on them in the house all day and night) was a sanctuary. A place to be with my thoughts, and learn how to translate those thoughts into rhythms and songs. No matter what was happening in my world, my drums were always there to listen, and to help me figure it all out.
Laying a strong foundation of drums and percussion to build a song off of, is fundamental to how we can relate the song to the audience in many different emotive ways. The melody paints the mood, the lyrics relay the story, and the rhythm is what connects the whole piece in our bodies, connecting this human experience that we all share to the deepest parts of our souls and bones. This is why drums play such a key element in so many ancient cultures. Getting to witness trance states brought on by ceremonial drumming and dancing in Africa, to the Celtic rhythms that help carry songs and stories of ancient lineages, to the deep prayer and meditation induced through the Indian rhythms of a raga.. rhythms tell the story of a culture, of a region, of something that is bigger than the individual.
As a session drummer and as drummer in many bands over the years, it has been my focus to help drive and transmit the song's feeling and message through the rhythm and percussive arrangements to allow the other musicians to feel the backbone is secure enough for them to venture deeper into the song.
If you are in need of drums that bump, drums that dance, or drums that allow the mood of the song to find it’s breath, I would be honored to work with you on finding your song’s rhythm
